Architectural wonders have caught the imagination
of humankind throughout time. The seven wonders,
both ancient and modern, are a case in point. Every
architect aspires to create a body of work that
is both enduring and functional. Since time immemorial,
an architects vision, his inspiration and
its subsequent implementation has been lauded by
mankind.
Instituted in the year 2004, Birla White Yuva Ratna
Awards recognises and honours this very spirit in
budding architects. Challenging and interesting
themes coupled with transparency in judging have
made this a very important award. Aimed at encouraging
young architects to push the boundaries of design
and creativity, the Awards in its sixth edition
saw a record high of about 2,500 entries from 96
architectural institutes across India and 31 entries
from Sri Lanka and Nepal.
This year, participants were asked to design a global
knowledge centre or a knowledge media centre. Unique
and innovative entries were submitted to meet the
high standards set by the contest.
For the first time since its inception, the contest
was opened to students of civil engineering, with
the theme: White cement A civil engineers
delight. The overwhelming response of 1,372
entries from colleges across the country bears testimony
to the popularity of this Award.

Commenting
on the response to this years Awards, Mrs.
Rajashree Birla said, For the last five years,
Birla White Yuva Ratna Awards has been unearthing
real talent among students in the architectural
world. This year the Awards gained substantial momentum
and the expanded profile has encouraged more students
to participate not just from India but from abroad
as well. For the 2009 edition, weve made a
conscious effort to provide a global platform with
an innovative theme. We strongly believe that today
education and knowledge gaining stretches beyond
the boundaries of an educational institute. The
response that we received makes us confident that
next year it is going to be an even greater success.
The Birla White Yuva Ratna Awards 2009 function
was held at the The Grand Maratha, Mumbai on 23
January 2010. Mrs. Rajashree Birla graced the occasion
as the chief guest. Also present were Mr. O.P Puranmalka,
Business Head - cement business, Mr. D.R Dhariwal,
President - Birla White and Mr. P.K Ray, Head
marketing. The judges for the national round were

Limaye and Quaid Doongerwala.
